RV = rdeče vino (sl.) = red wine (eng.) = vino rosso (it.)
The name RV stands for Roman and Vilma, Irena's father and mother, who started Lepa Vida winery back in 1988. The name was actually given by Matija - when he filled the barrels with this blend, he did not know what to write on the barrel, because it was a new experiment, without a "name". So the easiest way to remember that those three barrels were filled with red wine was to write on the barrels "RV" (rdeče vino in Slovenian language stands for "red wine"). Later we realized that the naming fits perfectly with our other names - MI, VI and now RV.
Making red wine in the Vipava valley is a bit bigger challenge than making the whites. Weather conditions in September and October can vary a lot. One year we can have almost an "Indian summer", which is perfect for the ripening of late varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are. And the next year we will have 3-4 weeks of wet, rainy weather that will slow down the ripening and increase the worries of the winemakers.
RV is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon where we give our valley the opportunity to show its character. The blend is medium-bodied, showing freshness and fruitiness in the mouth, enriched with oaky notes from 2 years in used French oak barrels.
